Salaulim Dam is one of the most important multipurpose dams in South Goa, located near Sanguem. It is constructed across the Salaulim (also known as Guleli) River, which is a tributary of the Zuari River. The dam is an earth-cum-masonry structure built mainly to meet the drinking water, irrigation, and industrial water needs of South Goa. One of its most unique features is the circular “duckbill” or “morning glory” spillway, which looks like a giant funnel; during the monsoon season, excess water flows into this circular opening, creating a spectacular and dramatic sight that attracts many visitors. The reservoir created by the dam spreads over a large area surrounded by lush green forests and hills, making the region rich in biodiversity and natural beauty. The dam also plays a vital role in controlling floods during heavy rainfall and ensuring water availability during dry seasons. Near the dam, there is a well-maintained garden and viewpoints, making it a peaceful tourist spot as well as an important engineering project. Overall, Salaulim Dam is not only a lifeline for water supply in South Goa but also a symbol of balanced development, combining utility, environmental significance, and tourism.
